Dr. Sanford Steelman

Steelman Endowment Fund established
Dr. Sanford L. Steelman of Hickory has established the Margaret Abee Steelman Endowment Fund for Teaching Excellence in Mathematics at Lenoir-Rhyne College .  The $200,000 fund was established to honor his wife, a top-ranking mathematics major and valedictorian of the college’s class of 1944. The fund will be used to encourage and recognize teaching excellence in the college’s mathematics department.

Sanford Steelman said he wanted to give this gift “in gratitude and love for the leading role Margaret has played in our family for the last 61 years.”

Margaret devoted her time to rearing a family before becoming a realtor. She worked a number of years for Weichert Realtors in New Jersey and was also licensed to sell real estate in New York and North Carolina .

Sanford Steelman, also a Lenoir-Rhyne graduate, earned a doctorate in biochemistry and physiology from the University of North Carolina ’s School of Medicine in 1949. Following his graduation, he joined Armour Pharmaceutical Company and earned distinction as a biomedical research scientist. Two years later he assumed leadership of the biochemistry department. In 1956 he became associate professor of biochemistry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston .

From there, Steelman joined Merck Research Labs and worked in various leadership capacities, including serving as director of international clinical pharmacology. He wrote more than 100 articles in scientific publications and obtained five patents. He is retired as senior scientific investigator from Merck & Co. Inc.

In 1988 he was recognized by an international committee as one of 200 people, living or dead, who had made a major contribution to reproductive and endocrine medicine. He shares this honor with more than a dozen Nobel Prize winners.

Steelman has also supported Lenoir-Rhyne through the Steelman Scholarship Endowment Fund for biology and chemistry upperclassmen and the Steelman Lecture Series. The series brings outstanding scientists to campus to lecture and interact with students and faculty. He and his wife are members of the college’s Heritage and Founders societies.

The Margaret Abee Steelman Endowment Fund for Teaching Excellence in Mathematics will be used primarily as a salary supplement for a member of the mathematics department who demonstrates teaching excellence. A portion of the fund will be used for professional development.
